DeepSeek says it filters “GEO manipulation”. What that means for your brand
Short answer: DeepSeek has said that its search engine filters “GEO manipulation”, but it has not said what counts. What you can act on is the part nobody disputes: content made to influence a system rather than to inform a reader is at risk, and content that makes true facts easy to find and check is not what a filter like this is aimed at.
What DeepSeek actually said
On 2026-10-17 DeepSeek opened its in-house search engine to developers as two APIs, Search and Fetch. The changelog entry says the engine powers search both on DeepSeek’s website and in its API, indexes hundreds of billions of pages, and:
filters SEO spam, GEO manipulation, and low-quality AIGC through strict detection mechanisms
The Chinese changelog uses the words 「SEO 作弊、GEO 操纵和低质 AIGC」. That is the whole statement. There is no list of tactics, no threshold, no appeal process, and the Search API reference has no field that tells you a result was filtered.
What is not known yet
- What “GEO manipulation” means in DeepSeek’s terms.
- Which signals trigger the filter, and whether it acts on one page or a whole site.
- Whether a page or site can recover, and how long that takes.
- How the chat model chooses which search results to quote in an answer.
We will update this page, with the date, if DeepSeek publishes any of this.
What is likely to be on the wrong side
This is our reading, not DeepSeek’s list. Each of these would count as manipulation under almost any definition:
- The same article, lightly reworded, published across many sites or many near-identical pages, one per query variant.
- Q&A answers, comments or “reviews” written by the brand but presented as independent recommendations.
- Hidden text or instructions placed on a page for models rather than readers.
- “Best” or “#1” claims with no source behind them.
- Articles generated in bulk that add no new fact, number or example.
What a filter like this is not aimed at
Also our reading:
- Correcting wrong facts about you on your own site, and saying the same facts the same way on your public profiles.
- Pages that state a date and keep it current.
- Structured data that matches what the page visibly says.
- Letting crawlers read your pages instead of blocking them by accident.
- Being listed on directories and platforms that describe you accurately.
What we do on our own site
- We don’t promise anyone a recommendation, and we don’t do negative GEO against competitors.
- Our posts on different platforms are written separately, each around different facts, rather than copied from one draft.
- As of 2026-10-21 every question page on citeshine.com shows a visible update date and carries datePublished and dateModified in its structured data.
- We measured how DeepSeek search sees our own domain. On 2026-10-20 a
site:citeshine.comquery returned no results. The method and the rest of the numbers are on How DeepSeek search finds and scores websites.

FAQ
Does DeepSeek penalize GEO?
DeepSeek said it filters “GEO manipulation”, not GEO in general. As of 2026-10-21 it has not published a definition, examples, or detection signals, so nobody can tell you exactly where the line is.
How do I know if one of my pages was filtered?
You can't, from the outside. The Search API returns no field that says a page was filtered. A page missing from a site: query may be outside the index, filtered, or simply not relevant to that query.
Does this apply to the answers on chat.deepseek.com?
DeepSeek says the same in-house engine powers search on its website and in its API. It does not say how the model then picks which results to quote.
Can you guarantee DeepSeek will recommend us?
No. Nobody can. We find what the engines say about you, trace it to the pages behind it, fix what can be fixed and re-test with the same questions.
